Unhappy A Real Scary Moment!

I started the GL today in order to let it cool down since it is 102 degrees here in the South. I ran back in for a sec. and left the key on my desk. I had to run about 10 miles away to pick up some papers. After about 5 mins. the display did its key not recognized thing. But I had only 10 more mins. to drive. So I would just pick up the papers and head back to the office and simply not turn the vehicle off. When I pulled in the the parking space, the GL turned itself off and of course would not start. Someone from the office had to bring me the key.

The concern is, what if I had stopped at a traffic light in the middle of a congested road and the vehicle decided to turn itself off. The bottom line is if you drive off without the key you better go back and get it because the vehicle will only run for a limited time without it.

There was a post a couple of years ago about the same thing in one of the car models. It quit running right in front of an M-B dealership. I believe he had to call a wrecker and have it towed a couple hundred feet, or so, to get it out of heavy traffic and then have his wife bring the key.

I gotta say, I was a little disappointed at not having Keyless-Go when I bought my truck, but I'm not missing it. Yes, it's a very cool thing to have, but if I could do just the doors and not the ignition I would. As for car jackers, they can take the car for all I care, it's just a thing. If I had kids and/or pets in a car in downtown Phoenix on a hot monsoon day and the thing died on me because somehow the key got left behind, I'd be a peeved monkey I tell you.

You can use KG just for doors and then put the key in ignition like a regular key. That would avoid the situation EFant wrote about.

That's what I do in my Bimmer with the "comfort access" which is same as keyless go in MB... Initially I used to panick at car washes with the keyless system and then I just started putting key in dash all the time to avoid issues
