Running boards revisited

The first two GL550's I've seen had the mirror-finish running boards (chromed steel, I assume). I somewhat prefer that look over the brushed stainless steel, just because it seems to go with the other chrome elements a little better. However, on the other thread it was mentioned that SS is actually more expensive than chrome. Is it a significantly higher quality material (likely to hold up better over time)? If so, I'll drop the issue; otherwise, I am inclined to ask the dealer to see if they can have the chrome boards stipulated on my order (if that is even possible). These running modifications to standard equipment are starting to get annoying.

Stainless if a "dirty" alloy can stain and even rust if it's a ferritic type, I don't know what MB uses. I have the high polish type and they are slightly magnetic so the base is probably carbon steel. Either material will last the "normal" life of the vehicle and look fine through the years so I wouldn't worry about it. I would just go with whichever one you prefer for appearance.

SL500, ML350, 2 GL550's (on order)
Yes, I agree. You shouldn't have to worry about either, especially if you keep it clean. I think I still prefer the chrome. I have asked the MB dealer that I placed the my order with, and it sounds like there is no way to specify either. If mine come in with the SS, I might have the dealer swap them out for chrome.

I picked up my 550 and it came with the brushed SS.
like you i have seen them with both in the real world and also pics I have seen on the net of the 550 reviewed and they have had the chrome finish........ I have asked two different dealer's and they do not have a clue as why they differ??
From what I have seen physically for myself is that the majority of 550's are coming with the brushed look.

While I really wanted the chrome finish,
the bushed does not look bad at all being my 550 is silver.
I would also imagine that the chrome would be that much harder to keep clean!
being it has a mirror shiny finish.

I would really like a explanation though as to why some are chrome and some are brushed??

That's true, as far as cleaning the chrome it's a lot of work to get in and around all the rubber disks to get the chrome to be a uniform looking shine and when it's dirty it looks a little duller like the brushed anyway.

Based on your pictures, I would say the brushed looks great with silver! Hopefully it will look good with Pewter as well, if that's what I end up with.
