msrp vs invoice
i have a chicago dealer telling me msrp only.
What are everyones thoughts and experiences??
I was able to get mine custom order in March for below INVOICE
.
I'm not intimately familiar with what the 450s are going for, but I know they've been dealing them like crazy here in Southern California. All hearsay of course, but I've heard many mentions of people getting them at invoice. For some actual hard evidence, I got my GL550 for below MSRP about a month ago, so no way would I expect a 450 to go for MSRP.
I'm not a hard core negotiator, but I'm willing to walk out if necessary. Always remember that anything above your 'magic number' (whatever you decide you are willing to pay) comes right out of your pocket and goes straight into the pocket of the person you are dealing with. I tend to bury my competitive nature in most situations, but keeping this in the forefront of my mind helped when I did the deal.
Perhaps most importantly, we're coming up on the end of the month. Guaranteed they want to make a deal. Tell them you want it for invoice and to give you a call if they're interested. You'll almost certainly hear back. Also, you're fortunate to be in the Chicago area- give some other dealers a call and see what they'll do.
It's hard when you see the car you want in front of you (it was for me anyway), but remember that you'll always be able to find the right car-- squeeze these guys for the deal you want.
Best of luck,

not trying to hi-jack the thread,
So do you buy $80,000+ vehicle, without actually looking at it in-person?

Here is the fine print on the cost differential from the lease offer "Advertised 33 month lease payment based on MSRP of $63,570 less the suggested dealer contribution resulting in a total gross capitalized cost of $61,492.47. " Start there, especially if you are ordering and there are no floor costs to the dealership. The below invoice deals, as this thread discusses, ususally are only given on vehicles the dealership wants to move like any late 2007's. 550's and diesels are different. Most will only give you token dealing on those higher demand models.
The issue I had was not being able to find the color I wanted on a just released 2008 model year and options I wanted locally. We only have 4 (3 in Phoenix and 1 in Tucson) MB dealers in the state and only 1 dealer had a single GL w/ the color I wanted and it was a 320. After reading about all the issues w/ the intercooler hoses, I will stay away from the diesel for now.
I got the 450 for about $3k less than what I was being quoted locally and saved a bit is state sales tax too.
The GL was shipped out in 2 days and was exactly what I expected.
Good communication w/ the dealer you are buying it from is key and I would not shy away from the practice if it gets you what you want for a better price.
Many would only knock 1k or 2k off msrp. Demand is great, yada yada. I said that with the economy and gas, once inventory picks up in the Spring, you guys will be choking on these things (not sure but it sounded good). Anyway, I finally got a manager from one of the dealerships on the phone and he asked me what I thought was fair. I said I would place an order for a 550 and pay him $500 over invoice for processing the paperwork. I thought that was fair. He gets a sale and $500 just for doing a little paperwork. He said fine and we did the deal, $500 over invoice.
Bottom line is that even the 08 450's and 550's will be made in quantity. No need to panic. You can negotiate with these guys. Best to find a dealer who does big volume since their "allocation" will be greater and they will be looking to just make whatever they can for selling another "unit". The smaller dealerships want (need?) to make the most they can from every sale.
