GL550 vs. R500
having been very happy with our 2006 R500 with 50.5k miles, i happened to be at the MB dealer today and test drove the GL550 today - 09 model, $82k.
it was a very nice car, very comfortable, solid, and felt nimble/powerful - more so than our 2006 R500.
not sure if it's my imagination, but the GL550 felt a bit floaty while driving on the hwy compared w/ the R500. it surprised me, the GL550 steering felt looser than R500. that said, the 382 hp engine felt much better/smoother/silkier than the R500's old 302 hp.
my $.02.
p.s. not sure about the measurements, but there's definitely more leg room in the 2nd AND the 3rd row in teh R-class vs. the GL.

It's not your imagination. Where you in the "sport" setting? That helps a lot but our GL 550 is a sofa on wheels compared to the other vehicles I drive. Personally, I don't care for its driving dynamic all that much. It's confused between true comfort and sport, pulling off neither very well. Without a doubt, the best-looking SUV inside and out. My wife is very pleased and that's all that matters. Your R-class couldn't be any uglier, but due to it's lower center of gravity, probably drives better than the GL. My friend loves the R-63 that is his wife's/family hauler.

also, i dont know how your senses are calibrated, but compared to an x5 or a cayenne or even a q7 the gl trucks have the most numb steering along with effective, but grabby non-linear brakes...
just another point of view

I have a complaint to add, The stereo sub woofer being buried in an enclosed compartment. If you open or remove the access door (right hand side by tailgate) the Bass sounds great. MB recognized this same issue on the 09 MLs and installed a speaker grill. On the GLs nothing was done.
