Glk

Just read a short article in the CarConnection on the new GLK. Some spy shots but really can't see anything other than it looks like a baby GL. Note the mention of a possible AMG model and the reference to the C Class. That probably means upgraded COMAND and Nav.

Wonder if this means the ML may be phased out eventually?

"New pictures have emerged of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK, a new compact SUV and a soon-to-be peer of the BMW X3 and Audi's coming Q5.

At first glance this test car looks like a disguised GL, but in reality this prototype is considerably smaller than Mercedes' full-size sport-ute. Translated, the name GLK means basically "short version of GL" as "K" is a diminutive of the German kurz , meaning short.

The GLK will use components from the new Mercedes C-Class, but will be close in design to the much larger GL‑Class. Power is expected to come from a 3.5-liter V-6 with Mercedes 4Matic all-wheel-drive standard. All versions are expected to have the 7G-Tronic TouchShift automatic transmission. Later on there could be a V-8-powered GLK63 AMG version.

The GLK will debut as a 2009 model and is expected to be introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 2008."

Something needs to compete with the x5 and x6 especially if bmw comes out with the x7, the true GL competitor. MB could make the GL it's new sportier model now that it has been relieved of it's soccer mom duties. Or is there a GLS coming to compete with the x6, the CLS suv???

Huh? CLS suv? GLS? No such vehicles.

The GLK competes with the X3. The ML competes with the X5. The X6 will have that sporty suv/coupe thingy to itself right now when it comes to competitor from Mercedes-Benz.

The ML will be move upmarket some come next-redesign like the X5 has been move upwards in price this time around. No way is the ML going to be phased out.

The GL just jumped over 500 in Germany, overtaking the Porsche Cayenne.

If it "shares components with the C-class" it will be built in Germany and/or South Africa.

I don't think so. Shared components does not control where the car is assembled. The GL/ML and R all share components with other models I am sure. Engines, transmissions, electronics, etc. I am sure Vance will be the primary assembly location for the GLK and probably also some done in EU or SA.

Engines and transmissions are the ONLY components Alabama-made vehicles share with other Mercedes.

BMW makes the X3 in Europe and Mercedes will make the GLK elsewhere, too.

So we're saying the same thing in that the ML competes with the X5. The X6 will be a sport coupe four door suv which has no planned MB competition that I've read about in my three car mag subscriptions. That's where I made up the GLS, a sport coupe four door suv.

Hey Jack...the GLK will be produced exclusively in Germany at the Bremen plant. This was announced officially a while back. They'd have to make some serious changes to produce the GLK in Bama.

Oh ok gotcha. Well if I know Mercedes and typical German "whatever they do we can do better" sentiment between BMW/MB/Audi, the next ML will likely include some sportier derivative to tackle the X6. Such a vehicle would likely be called the MLS, though that name doesn't sound right for obvious reasons.

BMW is moving the X3 production to South Carolina from its current location in Austria. It may also produce the X6 in South Carolina, and it may move the Z production to South Africa or Austria where it has plenty of capacity.

The lion's share of X3 sales are in the US so this makes sense. Also the Z is sold worldwide with good numbers outside the US so it make sense to move it overseas.

As for components, my dealer states that the electrical problems with my GL are now all repaired and we are waiting only for a control unit from Germany, even though the GL is assembled in Alabama. Makes you wonder why they can't get one from Alabama directly instead of waiting for shipment from Germany.

Most websites quote 3rd Q next year as an '09my. Look for the Diesel the following year (IMO).. plenty of "gotta have the 1st one" buyers for the gassers.

love it! if the x3 weren't so ugly we likely would have gone that route. as much as we love our gl450 it's a bit of overkill for our needs. glk might be a better fit.
