Tires

Has anyone had a chance to try ou the 19" contis on their 450 in the snow or ice yet? I am very anxious that they won`t peform well in the snow as I have heard some bad things about conti`s in general. Any input will be greatly appreciated. If tires are not good what did you replace them with?

They are GREAT in snow, rain, etc. However, they don't last long. After just one year with 26,000 miles, they had to be replaced. I decided to go with Yokohamas this time...

I bought some extra MB wheels last year from the Tire Rack for snow wheels. I installed bridgestone Blizzaks on them. These tires are the best snow tires I have ever found. Michelin Alpines are a close second. I am using Yokohama geolander snow tires on one of my pickups and they work very well also. The only draw back to my extra wheel setup is that I did not change over the air pressure sensor from the original wheels and an extra set from MB was to expensive. I get to see the orange low pressure light on the dash during the winter but I have learned to live with it.

This thread has brought one question to my mind: does MB fit M&S rated tires on the GLs? I know BMW does not on the X5 and they require snow tires in the winter, especially for cars with the sports package.

Our Lexus LX came with Bridgestone M&S rated tires that did not require snow tires and they performed flawlessly during the winter months, even during that record 26" snow fall in New York in 2006.

Hopefully the GL will be the same story as my wife wants it as the replacement for the Lexus.

rkao,

The standard Continental tires on all of the GL's have the same "Mud and Snow" rated compound regardless of tire size. Oddly enough, we have had virtually no snow in the mountains yet, so I've only been able to drive my 550 in the snow once.
