Discount Tire sells wheels under the "MB Wheels" label (No relation to Mercedes-Benz). I went with the "Essen" wheel because it was one of the few the fit the GL550. Other wheels were 2-3x the price. For winter I wanted something decent, but not so nice I care about salt eating them.

Discount could not get the Dunlop tires I needed in time, so I went to Tire Rack. (Tire Rack did not have much of a selection on wheels.) I love the M3 Sport tires. After reading the reviews on Tire Rack, they have millions of miles and people still give them an average rating of 9+. With the performance on the GL 4matic, I would definitely buy the whole package again.

4 wheels
Quick Update from the weekend.

The GL550 with its monstrous 21" wheels ate up all the snow and ice in Big Bear over the weekend. I didn't need chains or snow tires. 4-Matic along with brand spanking new tires and ESP got me through unplowed roads and roads that had about 8" of ice on them.

I saw Audi's, BMW's with xDrive, and other trucks get stuck in snow. A true testament to overkill engineering.

Skiing? That is far too complicated. I take the route of snowboarding lol. Now that is fun.

2008 GL 550
Sorry so late - I forgot to subscribe to the thread. Here's the pic. I had the same issue on my Porsche with some Michelin track tires. I was told that this is a preferable situation than a rim being on the narrow side because it makes the tire act like its wider during cornering (i.e. the rim supports the sidewall better).
