GL thread content...
Anyone else notice that the GL thread is one of the most "trouble free" forums. Usually the majority of car threads are buyers (new MB owners and old) who are complaining, citing major and common problems and a host of other negative remarks.
The GL forum has the occasional car with a problem but the problems are limited to no more than one or two owners. Most of the comments are positive and talk about how great the vehicle is. That I think shows that MB has passed the low point of their quality drop and are now back in the proper mode as the world's leader in the luxury car market.
Also the tone of this forum is different than most...no nasty interchanges or slamming someone or something. Also as I have mentioned before the sense of humor is what makes this fourm a fun thing to read and participate in.
Just wanted to note the above because I enjoy the GL and most of all the people who drive them...

That's an interesting observation Jack. I'm grateful for the respect paid to one another on this board and have really enjoyed the exchanges. It certainly has increased my ownership pleasure of the GL.

Says something about the vehicle and the drivers............both worthy of praise
Very well said, one and all. I don't normally participate in these types of forums, but this one is definitely out of the the norm and has greatly added to the enjoyment of the new vehicle as was previously said. Thanks to all involved for a great time
.

I agree. GL forum is the first car forum I ever participated in and have really enjoyed. This forum has been very helpul and actually probably nudged us to take the plunge and buy the GL. Recently I went on Audi S4 forum and let me tell you, people are mean, the forum is confusing and was not helpful at all.
Lets hope we can keep our forum uplifting and energized.

The 2007 annual Consumer Report does not present the GL in a very favoriable light. I personnally think that the editors can't stand German cars and will do anything to make them look bad.
I enjoy driving the GL, whenever my wife lets me; I'm on probation. She thinks I speed too much and am more aggressive than I should be.

As someone who writes in the other sections of the forum from time to time, I must say that I agree with NJ's take on the general tone in this section. This is likely due to the types of people who participate here. We all have a degree of success in our lives, or else we wouldn't be able to afford these vehicles, but at the same time, we don't feel the need to "prove" anything. The members who write in the other forum sections are generally quite nice and friendly, but there are occasional attempts to prove who has the "bigger hose." Feathers get ruffled a little more easily, but I suspect that it may be a function of the age of the participants. We've all had times in our youth when we had a short fuse, and perhaps now as we look back we can see some humor in our behavior. We have been blessed with having access to the Internet and being able to have "conversations" with people from all walks of life, if only using the written word. Logistically, it would be impossible to have all of us in a room so we could actually talk the old fashioned way, but I think if that were possible, this group would remain its cordial self. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go pick a fight in the AMG section.
What a timely thread, NJ................
I have been wondering myself how most of us GL owners have same nits that we pick (tiny mirrors, anyone
) or same features that we all like (too many to pick an example
). I am guessing that what Joe said "We've all had times in our youth when we had a short fuse, and perhaps now as we look back we can see some humor in our behavior." is on the mark that age and experience have a lot to do with the tone of discussions.
I am no stranger to the Internet (I helped Al Gore invent it) but this is the first car forum I have ever participated in. And it is one of the best investments of my time and energy. So a BIG THANK YOU to all of you including STP (and no, I don't want your beer or blankie
).

Seriously, and to the point, the friendliness and helpfulness of this forum is unusally refreshing. Recently I bought my wife a new M5 and went to the M5 board for advice on how to set up the SMG transmission. The level of snobbery and contempt from some of the responders was striking. (Of course many were helpful and friendly.) The point is that it is unusal for anyone to be anything but respectful and helpful on this board. So yet again NJ rules in his comments.
Merry Christmas to all!

When my wife got her '06 A6 I was immediately banned to our Chevy TrailBlazer. It only took me 3 years until I could get a speedster of my own... the GL.

Sadly, as a new model, the GL has been pretty troublesome, and the majority of folks who send in responses tend to be the ones pissed off about someting. Mercedes has in its recent past a fairly extended period of well below par reliability, I think in no small part to its alliance with Chrysler, who were infamous for crap. But they're coming out of it and as I believe in the current and future generation diesel concept as well as Mercedes as a company who, at least to some extent, want to build quality luxury cars, I got a GL anyway. When there's been a problem, they take care of it. The fact that it has problems, I'm aware of and live with. Doesn't mean it should happen or that I should blame someone else for pointing that fact out, but it is my own decision.
As for being too agressive and speeding too much - what the heck are big German cars made for, for goodness sake? They're the ones with the Autobahn!
My wife finds it interesting, funny and weird that I am on this board frequently and sometimes talk about it (with her). When I really want to freak her out I start rattling off people's screen names. She wonders what the heck there is to talk about on a forum about cars. Please forgive her, she knows not what blasphemy she utters! She should know better because she knows how much I research things and how much I enjoy sharing it.
That said, there is a strange sense of, dare I say, family, here.

It’s not your imagination Jack. I scrutinized the GL, ML and R boards on a few sites before buying and, comparing ‘07’s to ‘07’s, the GL was relatively trouble free. I’d had understandable trepidation about MB’s recent reliability. I wasn’t interested in an ML, just any pattern in problems. It’s clear the GL is different even though built on the same platform in the same plant.
Don’t forget, the folks on this board are also great because they have great taste in vehicles. It might be interesting to see if other large premium SUV forums (LX470, MDX) are as civilized.
The only bias I’ve seen in Consumer Reports is an anti-SUV bias. SUV’s with good gas mileage for their size like the GL we are told are a little disappointing because of disappointing MPG. Show me an SUV in 2007 that gets 30 MPG and I’ll show you one you couldn’t pay me to drive.

I think the maturity level here (LOL
) has a lot to do with price of the GL. A lot of the other sections here (not going to name names *cough* ML, C *cough*) can get pretty rowdy and downright insulting because the depreciation and lower price means the younger folks can finally own a Mercedes. The GL is too new to depreciate enough and there aren't many 18-20-something year olds able to afford a GL.

I did go to school in a Southern state so the accent comes out every now and then.

I've participated on a lot of forums (motorcycle & dog related) and this is my first car forum. I lurked here a lot before I actually posted, doing research before I bought my GL.
I have to say, this is by far the friendliest forum I've been on. Being a female and entering a traditionally male-dominated area (car forum) I was a bit hesitant, but then again, I'm a biker chick, so I just pushed my way in here and was made to feel very welcome.
I hate going to the dealership & asking a question because I never know if they're feeding me a line of B.S. because I'm female or if they truly don't know the answer. I'm thankful I have this forum to check things out on, so I thank all of you who have been so helpful in answering my many questions!

Here, Here!
The real-world experiences and data captured within this forum were major contributing factors for me when I purchased my GL. This information weighed much more heavily for me than the data from online reviewers and car magazines.
A big thanks to everyone for making the GL forum a community like no other!
