Differences Between 2007 and 2008 GL

We had some discussions already about the 2007 and 2008 model year minor differences.

1. The insert around the headlamp switch and the inserts around the window controls are now black. In our 2007 they were color coordinated in macadamia.

2. The center console only has a single hinged cover and single compartment not a double hinged cover and a double compartment. In 2007 the upper thin compartment was to thin to be useful (IMO).

3. There is a small digital clock in the bottom right hand corner of the command screen (image is from the 2008 ML, but the GL has it too). I don't remember if this was on the 2007 command screen but others on this forum have stated it was not there in 2007.

4. The Multifunction Display now constantly displays what the cruise control speed is set to (image is from the 2008 ML, but the GL has it too). This is a great addition and I do not remember the 2007 having this.

I'd love that clock. The analog clock is terrible. Anyone know if a software upgrade to an '07 will do it?

I could have sworn that the up/down shift buttons on the 2007 GL450 that I test drove allowed you to shift up or down on either side depending on if you pushed on the left or right side of the button. On the 2008 model you can downshift with the left button and upshift with the right button only. Could be wrong. I also think that the back-up camera is standard for 2008.

On my 07, it's downshift on the left & upshift on the right.

Same with mine, however, in the original literature published for the 07 run, it was stated that up or down shifts could be made from either side.

Back up camera was an individual option only in 2007.

In 2008 it is included in the one of the packages, I think P1??

When I purchased my 320 in May of '07, it came with the MB Tex steering wheel. I purchased a wood and macadamia leather wheel off eBay and had it installed. With the original wheel, it was downshift on the left, upshift on the right. Now it's downshift pushing the inside of the buttons and upshift on the outside (either side). It may be the wheel (fitted with rockers instead of just switches) and it may be a setting the tech has to change, but it fooled me the first time I had to use it. (Long story involving the charged air return hose)

For MY2008:

The headlamps will automatically be cleaned with a high-pressure water jet when:

• the headlamps are switched on,
• the windshield washer fluid has been operated five times.

Note: The washer fluid counter will reset when the ignition is switched off or when the headlamps are switched off.

Hi

• the windshield washer fluid has been operated five times.
Does first clause depend on 2nd ? It better be. Wonder what happens if the door is open and someone switches on the headlight ? I am not sure why they removed the manual push button

I also posted a few minor differences I noticed when my wife swapped her '07 for an '08:

1) The rear armreset used to have a little compartment in it that was just perfect for storing DVDs for the RSE ... its not there anymore.

2) The '07 had an audible "chime" when you change gears (i.e., from Drive to Park). The '08 is silent when switching from Drive to Park. We got used to listening for the chime to confirm we were in Park and could take our foot off the brake ... now we actually have to look at the display. Life is rough.

We are very happy that they added the digital clock (although that was not the reason we swapped the '07 for the '08).

I have a 07 GL450 (built later in 2007) and I don't have the little compartment in the rear armrest. Anyone have a picture?

I forgot to mention the "chime" when going into PARK is gone, as correctly stated above.

I never used the steering wheel gear shift buttons in the 2007 GL so I wouldn't know if the way the function is different in the 2008 GL.

I second what Jim said about a small compartment in the rear armrest to store DVD's. I never saw it in my 2007, but I did not have the factory RSE. In 2007, could the back arm rest have bee a different style for those who had the factory RSE??

I agree.......and, if you leave your headlights in the "auto" position all of the time are they considered by the system to be "on?" (just to complicate the picture a bit) I personally like being able to activate the washer system anytime I think I need to!!!

That makes sense. The model I test drove had the wood and leather steering wheel. So this isn't a model year specific feature.

The window controls were always black, though the headlight switch was color-keyed.

The steering wheels have always been leather, no MB Tex steering wheels.

That's leather? Geez, I really could not tell the difference in feel between the steering wheel and the seats. I guess Tex is good stuff!

BTW, while my switches are, themselves, black, the surround is color-keyed to my macadamia interior, just like the light switch is black but its surround is color keyed.

Could it be this little compartment was a feature on the 550's?

This feature is also on 2007, except I think it operates after 15 times. Probably because 07s had the switch which I really like

phybenz,

Yes, the window switches themselves were black, but the plastic piece around the black switches was macadamia color in our 2007 GL450.

I am quite sure about this, but I will review some old pictures of that 2007 truck and see if I have a shot that includes the window switch area.

phybenz,

I found a 2007 GL picture that has the window switch plastic frame in the image. It confirmed that the plastic surrounding the black window control switches was color coordinated in 2007, it was macadamia.
