GL Class (X164) 2007-2012: GL320CDI, GL420CDI, GL450, GL550

GL420 Diesel...what will you pay?

OK let's assume GL Fahrer's translation is accurate. It would suggest that there was a 22K difference in price, for no other reason than, the V6 to the V8. Everything else is apples to apples and to add the same features as the 550 would cost an extra 10 - 12K.

I'm not buying it. There has never been a diesel engine in the history of diesel engines that added 22K to the price tag. My Duramax, the most expensive-to-date diesel engine in the US, minus the allison tranny, since all the GL's will have the 7 spd, cost a whopping $7200.

On the other hand, if the 22K got you the V8 diesel and all the trim of the 550,........... that would make sense.

2 things; how is it currently sold in Europe, the V8 diesel - like the 320/450? The mock up for the US was like the 550 but that was for a Bluetec version. And also, I'd have to agree that the V8 alone wouldn't be worth $22K based on the reviews it's gotten (not the expected performance or mileage on the V8 that is currently being sold in Europe).

In US, I think they will offer 420 with all "bells and whistles". Else I agree, Scotty, I don't see a 22K premium just for a bigger diesel engine.

Fahrer - the price you posted for 420 included any options or was it the base model?

Well after all the input and pricing listed my position is as follows.

We will probably NOT (meaning 99%) see the GL420 in the US market this year, next year or the year after that and maybe never. By the time it would be considered, there will be other engine combinations like a hybrid diesel or some other more efficient engine package available.

Just my humble opinion...:-)

unless you buy a prius or smart etc you'll never get your money back buying a big suv type vehicle. all your doing is helping the environment etc. your paying not to pollute and get off oil.

I can tell you this without any uncertainty. Over the last 15 years, buying pickups, a diesel as opposed to a gas, you get all your money back and then some at resale. I have done so consistently over the last 5 vehicles (2 personal and 3 company).

I base this on the comparative resale of the same vehicle with the same miles accompanying a gas engine. People will eagerly buy a diesel with 100K+ miles but are reluctant to purchase the same vehicle with a gas engine.

Will this apply to the MB diesel SUV's? Only time will tell. There is no data base yet for any conclusive discussion. If so, it definitely takes away some of the pressure for a vehicle to pay for itself, merely by cost savings in fuel.
