Help - Interior Ambient Lighting
My GL320CDI included option 318 Full Leather Seating Package - includes rich Burl Walnut wood trim, wood/leather steering wheel, and the low-intensity glow of interior ambient lighting. I am unable to find anything in the owner's manual regarding the definition of ambient lighting. The only lighting I detect is the glow of the instrument cluster lighting. Can someone shed some light (no pun intended) on this option? I thought I was getting the interior ambient lighting similar to the W221 variant. TIA.

Its in all footwells, behind interior door handles, and under rearview mirror. Puts out a nice glow when its really dark inside, but not near as effective as my '06 E320.

Also in the driver's side of the cup holders and inside the center storage compartment.
And, I think it is under the front seats so that the rear passengers have some low level light on the rear floor. I have to re-check this though?

I have the '08 S550 and formerly had the GL450. The ambiant lighting in the GL is very misleading compared to the S. It is exaclty as stated in the previous posts.

it never said it would look just like the s-classes version.

What EinMD says. I have the S550 & now the GL. A bit misleading in that the ambient lighting of the W221 is significantly more obvious as the word ambient suggests. I'm disappointed, but admit I am influenced by the W221 definition.

True, in the fact MB never compared the ambient lighting in the GL to the S. However, being that Mercedes just began using the feature with the 2007 S550 and GL450, it is reasonable to expect something comparable between the models. Just the very nature of this post questioning the ambient lighting in the GL indicates a deficiency. The lighting is very obvious in the S. My 2000 E320 had lighting in the foot wells and door pulls. I believe the only other place the "A.L." is displayed in the GL is the cup holder.

I did not say it would - I made an assumption and as a result had a higher expectation. Nothing can be done, nor do I expect it. Just disappointed.
OTOH, where did you find in writing "ambiant lighting does what it says in the gl and ml's" and "it never said it would look just like the s-classes........"?

i was mereley saying that mercedes advertised it more like extra soft glowing lights so the interior isnt as dark.
i would have loved it if it looked more like the s-class, but what it is is what it is.
hell, we ml owners get the short end of the stick for accessories becqause of the gl. even with the p3 package, we still don't have wood trim under the dash, and even with the 1500 dollar leather option.. we still get a vinyl dash and no leather inserts for the door panels.
