A couple of weeks ago MB announced its product line-up for the next 3-4 years. The GL will get a mid-life facelift in 2009 ie. model year 2010.
GL Fahrer can maybe tell you what to expect.

It looks like the 8-year product cycle like the W163 MLs is being used again if MY2010 gets the mid-life refreshening.

That's ok by me.. the longer the model is out usually means continual improvements that "drip" down to our current GL's as failed parts are improved and replaced. Let's just hope the airmatic pumps get better!

I think the failed parts keep getting used until they are all gone...and they must have a bunch left. When my 04 E55 got flatbedded to the dealer, the holding lot had a S, a GL and new MLs all dropped.
