New shoes
I got a set of Michelin Diamaris tires for the truck today. I replaced all four as the rears had worn down to the safety bars in about 10,000 miles, but the fronts were the originals, which lasted 22,000 miles, and were at the same wear level. I was surprised that the rears wore down so quickly after having them replaced last summer while on vacation (that story is in a different thread.) I'm meticulous about keeping the tires at the recommended 32 psi all around. Now I'll have the truck's allignment checked and see what happens with this set. Hopefully, they'll last up through the lease end, which is next September. Then it will be either a Bluetec GL320, a GL550, or an ML if my dad, who will then be 80, prefers a smaller truck. After all, it's his daily driver, so he should be the one to choose. I had forgotten how quiet and S-class-like the ride is on this truck...I guess I had gotten used to the tire howl from the old shoes.

There is definitely something wrong with that. I have a PE also and changed all 4 of my Diamaris tires at 15k miles because they were feathered and howling like crazy. There was at least 60-70% remaining on the tires and wear was very even outside of the feathering problem. My new Diamaris tires have 7k miles on them and both front and rear look brand new! If I had to guess, I would say that the rear end damage your car suffered has messed up the rear alignment. Take it to the body shop you used or the dealership and make sure your alignment is spot on or else you will replace your tires again at 10k miles.
