I have been thinking about getting some winter/offroad wheels for my GL.

Looks like a found the right place to start researching. I want to put K02's on it and go to the smallest wheel I can.

Smallest wheel is the X164 18" GL wheel. They barely clear the brake caliper.

I was looking at a set on ebay with tires, but they would never get back to me with the tire date codes. As I get closer to needing new tires over the next year or so, I'll start searching in earnest for some 18s.

It was not Jake's rig. It was Jay's. It looks like 20 split-spoke wheels to me.

Those are definitely 20 inch rims.

I am trying to understand how big of tire I can go with without rubbing. 285/55R20 or 2285/50R20 or 275/55R20.

Leaning toward 275/55R20 to get BFG KO2's.

I am also wondering if they will set inward on a GL550. I am thinking of using the wheels as winters wheels and when we go camping up north.

Datapoint: I have 285/50R20 Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts right now, and they fit fine. they are pretty street oriented, with minimal lugs. Couldn't tell you if the thicker tread on KO2s would be an issue.

I am looking at a set of 20x9.5 wheels. The 275/55R20's KO2's would be stretched more than I like on them thought within spec.

285/55R20's would be 2 inches taller and .2 inches narrower then stock, but also $120 a per tire more. (need an inch of clearance)

Just a side note, in case you didn't take this into account... When a tire is "2-inches" taller, it is really only 1-inch taller as far as the clearance goes because the 2-inch part is the overall diameter. Meaning, it will be 1-inch closer to the wheel well, along with adding 1-inch to your ground clearance.

18 inch gl wheels with 265/65R18 bf goodrich all terrain ko2's. no clearance issues at all even with articulation of the suspension off road. love these tires. also the fact that with the ko2's being a pretty popular tire and well known, you can know what you're getting before you even have them installed. i looked at a lot of options that were a little cheaper like the falken wild peaks, general grabber at2's (very similar tread pattern to the ko2), and nitto terra grappler. i kept coming back to the idea of if i'm gonna spend any money on tires, it might as well be something that is tried and true.

Nice setup and happy it worked, but its begging for a bigger tire! But obviously you run the risk of rubbing.

I'm considering a 275/50 R21 tire. Current setup is 295/40 r21, Measures 30.3" tall x 11.6" wide. New set up would be 31.8" tall x 10.8" wide. Does anybody see this being a problem. I measured the wheel from center and it looks like it will clear. Rims are OEM AMGs 21". I'd like more side wall, since it will somewhat protect the rims and I can air down a bit when I need to.

Couldn't get the tire size I wanted 275-50-21, tire technician advised against it. Too narrow for the 21x10 AMG. Ended up getting stock size 295-40-21 Continental Extreme contact. Will be selling the Perelli's since they still have some good thread on them if anyone is interested, Wichita Ks area. Will report back on new tire performance, got some snow yesterday and will have them mounted tomorrow afternoon.

Odd - 275/45R-21 are supposed to work with rims up to 10.5 inches. Though I think you will have less curb protection. I was thinking of them for winter tires. They are a bit taller and narrower.

Example:

275 are too narrow and normally go on 8.5" wide rims. I asked, but the technician at Discount tire said I would be stretching it. Not safe, especially since the tires needs to flex. The only other option was the 285/45/21 but they didn't have any tires in stock in that size and I needed them before the weekend since I'm traveling to Pittsburgh and DC for the holidays. I needed a good All season tire and the Conti Extreme contact fit the bill. They are backed up with deliveries because of the holidays and I needed tires before the weekend. So far they are a night and day difference compared to the Pirelli Scorpion Zero, those things are scary in wet/snowy roads.

The Extreme DWS are great tires. You will like them.

The manufacturer recommends them on anything from 8.5 to 10.5 inches for 275/45R21. They did the measurements on a 9 inch rim. The concern would be you would have limited hang over on your rim for protecting it from curbs. On the plus sde you would have half inch taller than stock tire. Oddly the 275/50R21 you wanted only say they fit up to 9.5 inch rim and measured on 8.5 inch rim.
