I personally don't have any experience with the G550, but I can tell you that the GL will be the better value. It's larger, and better designed in my opinion. Plus I'm sure the ride comfort doesn't even compare. The GL is pretty much an suv version of the S-class.

The GL is a 21st century design and the G is a 1970s design. Originally designed to compete for a military contract and certainly not to be a luxury town car.
The G is the better off roader, for sure.
The GL has lots more interior room and is very likely more comfortable in every way.
The G--for sure not the GL--will hold its value better. The GL550 these days is dangerously close to Hummer in terms of public perception and surely, again, resale value.
Being built in Alabama (and from personal experience) the GL is not even close to comparable to an S-class.
Hard to see, however, the G being worth $30-40K more than a GL.
