TPM sensor 2008 GL550 - part number needed
Hello,
Anybody could help me with the part number for the TPM sensor for a 2008 GL 550? Also, if anybody found a compatible TPM sensor from another manufacturer, I could use some ideas. My dealer wants 180 for 1 sensor, times 4 that's some serious cash, I'm trying to find something cheaper if possible.
Thank you,
Marius

Amar,
Rather that getting a whole new unit from the dealer, you should look into having your existing unit re-built. Quite a few tire dealers specialize in this now and actually get their parts directly from the sensor manufacturers. I know that Discount Tire here in Arizona is able to rebuilt the VDO/Continental TPMS sensors that are used on MZB.
By the way, the at the getmercedesparts.com link that Kent placed above, the sensor price is $162

Thanks Danno, I need an extra set of sensors because I bought another set of wheels with all season tires for fall-winter driving and was planning to swap the two sets of wheels without having to move the TPM sensors everytime i do it. but for $160-180 x 4, I think I'll just drive for 4 months with the nasty light on my dash :-(

oh, one more question, assuming I buy sensors for the new wheels, do I have to go to the dealer for them to reprogram something or is it enough to just do a tire pressure reset for the new sensors to be "mated" with the car?

I bought the stock 19" wheels from a dealer over on ebay. The wheels came with the stock continentals, brand new, take-offs from new cars that opt for customizations. The stock 19" contis are not quite the best tire in wet and snow but they're sure better than the summer tires that come on with the 21" wheels. That and the narrower tire should make a world of difference. I live in Seattle and we had a nasty spell in december, 10 days with tons of snow and then slush. The summer contis did ok (well, the GLs 4matic did its job) but on slush it was just nasty, the wide tire just could not push all that snow and water aside, it was not good and it didn't feel safe at all.
I definitely expect and improvement with the 19".

Hi Amar - can you please let us know where you ended up getting your new set of TPMs? Also does the GL550 have 315Mhz or 433 Mhz sensors? I am also looking into getting a set of winter wheels and tires and will most prbly pull the trigger on lightly used GL450 wheels, but they do not have the TPMs. Thanks in advance, Nick

I had the 19" Contis as OEM on my '08 320 CDI but I had a LOT of problems with hydroplaning on the freeway where the wear grooves collect water. Couldn't keep the cruise control engaged at even 50 mph! And it rains here in SW Wash like in Seattle. I installed a used set of 18" rims and new Michelins when the Contis wore out after only 15 k mi! The other day we hit heavy rain going N out of Vancouver WA and the cruise control stayed engaged even at 70 mph! I DON'T recommend Contis in the wet (OR the 12 inches of wet snow we had last winter!)
