The time hasn't come yet, but I'm anticipating replacing the stock Goodyear Eagle LS-2 RunOnFlat 275/50-20 with non run-flats. I live in suburban NJ (service stations every 300yds) so I'm not worried about not carrying a spare. My question is: Are there reasons why I shouldn't go with higher profile 275/55-20??? greater selection for this size and the prices considerably more reasonable, plus higher profile would protect rims from 10" potholes.

The difference would be that he tire circumference would be off with the higher profile..so the speedo would be off, on the slower side. I'm also thinking of going with a different size because of the lack of OEM choices...but if you go 285/55/20 you'd be closer to the stock tire circumference...I'm thinking about these Yoko Parada X

thanks for the tip. i know you meant 285/50/20. i noticed with the stock Goodyear run-flats the actual tread width (contact on road) is quite a bit narrower than overall width... agree with you about the yokohama parada spec-x. if you decide to go with them, be sure to write a review.

We will be staying with the runflats on our '09 for safety reasons, but I do hope someone else comes up with a 275/50/20 runflat. I was never impressed with the Eagle LS that came originally on our w210, and the normal LS-2's have horrible ratings on tirerack.
To answer your question, I don't see any reason that 275/55/20's wouldn't work. Speedo will likely read a couple percent slow, but the difference should be negligible. My uncles have had good experiences with the Bridgestone Dueler Alenza in that exact size on their '07 Suburban & '07 Tundra.
