Advice - Buy Certified or Not?

I am looking at buying a used GL from a MB dealer with 31K miles. They want $41K non-CPO'd and $43K CPO'd. Based on the current mileage, the amount we drive and the inservice dates, I have calculated that buying as a CPO will provide me with an additional 17 months of coverage vs non-CPO'd.

From your experiences, is the 17 months worth the $2000?

Thanks in advance
Shawn

Shawn,

What are the details on the GLs you're looking at? (Year, model, miles, etc.)

It's a 2007 GL450 with 31K miles and has the following options:
- P1 package
- Back up camera
- Bi-Xenon lighting pkg
- Heating pkg (steering wheel and back seats)
- Sunroof pkg
- Trailer hitch
- Rear seat enter. system

MSRP incl dest was 67,220

No offense, MSRP is meaningless on a used vehicle. It's much more about miles, condition, etc. Anyway, as I suspected, if you're getting a 2007 then don't hesitate to get the CPO. First production years (as is borne out by my own GL320) are problem prone, no matter what.

We bought an 08 with 18k miles and it is a 320 CDI. We also bought the CPO package.
Our reasoning was that this is a very complex vehicle with tons of electronics. Read through some other posts on cost to repair items after warranty has expired (Steve the Pilot for example).

2K wouldn't go very far to fix major problems on any make of car, on a MB the following systems could easilly reach 2K, transmission, climate control system, stability control system, Nav/stereo, engine, air suspension etc.

MB is making programming and other changes to the vehicle on a regular basis and as long as some warranty remains they will fix us up for free.

We would have had 3 years and 32k miles worth of warranty remaining, the CPO bumped that up a year and added 68k miles. We have peace of mind that we won't have a large repair bill catch us by surprise for several years.

Tell them $42.5 CPO'd. The CPO cost of warranty is not $2k.
