GL 550 Dead in Manhattan

Went into the city yesterday to meet some family for dinner, and when we left one block from the restaurant at the first stop light the car stalled and would not start again. WTF......... called roadside assistance had to wait almost two hours for a tow truck. Total B.S.

Dealer called me today said the fuel pump went bad. Hopefully should have the car back in a couple days.

How many miles on your GL? Common problem or just bad luck? Sounds like you will be back in action soon!

that sucks - Im curious of year and mileage as well. Knock on wood, but havent had any issues to speak of in the 3 months I've owned my new 550...hoping this is a long-term trend.

2008 GL 550 20,687 miles service manager says it is not a common problem. Other than this event never had any problems

I just experienced the EXACT same issue yesterday with my GL (2008 GL550 21,280 miles).

Engine started to cut out while driving in my neighborhood. It eventually stalled at a stop sign, never to start back up. Tele-Aid had a tow-truck there in about an hour and I had the car back the next day (with a new fuel pump installed). My SA also said it wasn't a very common occurrence; however, our GLs are strikingly similar in year and mileage, and both experienced this failure.

So, if you've got an '08 550 with just over 20K on it, you may want to prepare for a fuel pump replacement.

BMW has had high pressure pump failure in the 335 resulting in up to a month back order wait from Germany. Failure as early as 1000 miles.

Several weeks ago my GL320( 08 with 42K) did the same. It was the fuel pump. While I was waiting for the tow truck, the dealer roadside tech called and told me to try kicking the fuel tank just in front of the rear wheel passenger side and try starting the car. It worked and I cancelled the tow and drove to the dealer for the repair.

It must be universal service/SA bullsh@t to tell peolpe "yours is the first we've seen like this" when they know that's a flat out lie. Before internet forums/owner chat they could actually get away with this and no one knew any better. What are the odds 3 GL's out of our relatively small sampling of all GL's had the same problem that others don't?

Wow, I love it! Good to know that no matter how hi tech things get, a good old kick is still worth something !
