GL550 Rim and Tires
Quote: I have the 21 inch AMG wheels like new but they are the original ones that came on my 2008 GL. Just got the 2011 rims for it but have to say the old ones are just as sharp

Would like to know if you still have the GL550 Rim and Tire set. Would be very interested in purchesing them.

FYI

The tires on the 21" AMG wheels run about $550 each and you only have two choices…Conti and Pirelli

Also

Mercedes has issued a TSB on the 21" wheels that recognizes a common manufacturing defect which can cause failure at the spoke joints as a hairline fracture. The result is ultimately a wheel that will not hold pressure in a tire. I had one wheel replaced under warranty two months ago for this.

I am not sure that they would cover that if it is not a stock item but definitely worth asking before anyone buys them for anything other than the 550.

I know this is an old thread, but has anyone else had issues with this hairline fracture on the new GL550 wheels?

I tried to look for this service bulletin, but didn't see anywhere it was mentioned. This seems like a comprehensive list:

I'm also thinking of putting the 21's on my GL450. For anyone who has this set up already, how did it effect the ride? Just a bit concerned because I had an Audi Q7 with 20's and it was like driving without tires on the rims!

I have GL550 wheels/tires on my GL320. The ride is significantly better than the OEM run-flats that came on it. I find the handling better as well. It's a firm ride but not uncomfortable or annoying.

Gents, I am getting a new GL 550 in 3 - 4 weeks and planning on switching them for 22" aftermarket wheels and tires. The rims and tires will be the new style AMG 21" rims and if I understand correctly they will be coming with either Pirelli Scorpion or Continental Cross Contact UHP tires. The set up will be brand new as will be replaced before formal drive off. All hardware including TPMS sensors and center caps will be included as well.

Shipping is a possibility if buyer pays for shipping. If anyone is interested please feel free to PM me to discuss price. Thanks!

Im driving my dream truck ,a 2007 gl 450, for the pas 5 years now. i just bought a set of replica rims 22x10. if i put 305/40r22 tires, will there be any problems. i dont plan to make any modification on the truck. no spacers, no flaires on the fenders...nothing!! Is there a tire size that u gentlemens would recommemd instead? the 305`s will looks so good on my baby, but i don`t plan to hurt her either....

Be careful with oversized rims and make sure load rating is appropriate. 22s will definitely look nice however if you stick with stock AMGs you will get a good look and appropriate specs and ratings. There is a member on the X166 form whos selling his stock 21 inch AMG Newstyle rims unused- maybe you could consider those.. One other problem with big rims is it puts a lot of pressure on your transmission so be careful of that. 305s are fine however I stuck with 295s

heres one of the back tire..
i have a few more on the x166 page comparing new style and old style amg rims.
now- for my older GL i went with stock 20"amg off an ML 63 as the specs are exactly what works with the GL, withour flares and fills the wheel well very well..
21s looks sick too but tires for 20s seemed to be much cheaper- if i'm not mistaken for the 21" rims the only two available brands are contis and pirellis, with 20"s you can get michelin and many more greay brands..
hope that helps

Correct. I wish Michelin would make a tire for the 21's. The Pirellis that are on mine now have been very difficult to keep balanced. They are a great looking tire, but... It would be nice to have more choices.
