buzz and clicks when door is open/closed

Having recently got the GL, I'm wondering what is happening when the motor is off and the door is opened/closed. There is a high pitched motor or electronic signal and a series of clicks (coming from the front of the car) when the door is operated. Seems as if the car is coming out of 'sleep' mode, but there's probably a better explanation... enquiring mind wants to know.

thanks

It is more and likely the airmatic adjusting. When a door is opened or closed, the airmatic adjusts. Kinda sounds musical at times or like air being released. Completely normal

Just like a faint hissing noise as the suspension settles. I first noticed it on my mom's 2005 E500 wagon and again on my S550. My CL600 does it but much less obvious.

It is the airmatic system on your truck. My twelve year thinks it is quite cool.

Thanks-- its just odd that it does it when the doors open and close, rather when the key is inserted or turned on.

Mine does it, too. It's like the airmatic preps for driving as soon as you open the door. I guess Germans never leave things in their cars by accident or do anything with the doors unless they're about to drive?

Your instrument cluster and your bluetooth both "fire up" simply when a door is opened, too.

As well as the NAV CD? ( or something in the COMAND unit as you hear a low rumbling noise ) .

Do the 2008 GLs even have hard drives in the COMAND ? The whirring and clicking sound is coming from inside the unit and starts as soon as I open the door from outside .

If not a hard drive (and I don't think they do) you'll be hearing the NAV DVD spin up, which would normally be noisier than a hard drive (which is more sealed to the outside than a DVD and less suceptible to vibration in the first place).

GL 320cdi, Chevrolet Avalanchero, GLE 350 (on order)
The sounds from the COMAND on older models are the cooling fans that come on as soon as it has power...
