Towing related ?: Are the lugs the same for the 18" wheel as the 20" wheel?

I am about to buy a 18" wheel/tire off ebay to serve as a spare tire for my GL350. I plan to carry the spare when towing and attach it to my trailer. Run flats are not suitable, when deflated, to carry the load of the vehicle and the trailer.

I have determined that the 18" factory wheel with 265/60/18 tires are suitable for towing situations with my 275/50/20 wheels/tires.

But do I need different lug nuts?

(BTW, I have discovered that when I ask the service/parts department these types of questions, they either cannot answer or they give me bad information. That is why I am here.)

As long as the diameter of the rim where the bolts feed through are identical/similiar you shouldn't have an issue. Just pay close attention to the way the lug seats to the rim as some lugs are convex etc..

They're the same lugs.

To check in the future, just measure how far the lugbolt threads project beyond the back face when comparing the two wheels. If they are the same, no concerns or get new lugbolts to get the same exposure. And to repeat, always check if the new wheel uses a cone or ball seat.

Very interesting, but none of it's necessary if using "factory wheel" as he says he will.

Now I just need to decide if buying the extra wheel/tire is worth $370. Or if I am better off with the risk of just carrying the patch kit and compressor.

Since I will be towing in remote parts of TX, NM, CO, my common sense says to get an extra wheel/tire. And by buying one, I will provide me a guarantee that I won't get a flat!

Update: Found a spare wheel/tire on ebay for $300 shipped and purchased it.

Be sure you have the mounting pin that I suspect did not come with runflat cars.

GL wheels/tires are mighty big/heavy and trying to mount a wheel without the pin will be real hard. Wheel bolts of GL are 14 mm.

Kent,

Great suggestion. I checked and determined that I do have that pin. And a jack, lug wrench, etc is included as well. I should be well prepared.

A single guide bolt works okay, but using two is easier.
