i have just returned the lease for my 2007 gl450 and ive financed a 2008 gl550. i will be picking it up Monday and would want to know any significant differences i will feel because of the different motor. i dont know much about the gl550 and it would be nice if someone could fill me in because my son(who is 14) is in love with this car and i dont know why, he wanted me to get the ml63 but the salesman said i was gonna kill myself so i didn't bother.

If your 450 had 18-in wheels, new Michelins are $222 each.

The GL550 tires are $433 each.

I just picked up my "new" 2008 GL550

the car is awesome.. much more alive than the GL450. I had a E500 wagon before.. sometimes, the 550 feels faster. ... and that says a lot.

plus.. the 550 comes with every option.. things that you wouldn't even know that you were missing in the GL450.

btw ... even if the tires are more expensive...if you are buying the 550.. I am sure you can afford it. (and of course the dedicated snows that you will need!!)

Yeah, GL550 is a lot safer than crazy ML63 AMG. Check-out this: Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Review of Safety . This gives the most complete breakdown that I've ever seen. Actually it reviews 2011 models, but it applies to any GL-Class model year, with an exception of Blind Spot Assist, which was introduced in 2011.
