Advice on 20" Rims on Appearance Package

I am about to order a 2011 and am debating if I should get the Appearance Package which includes the running board and 20" rims/run-flats. The cost is reasonable at ~$1300. The look is awesome.

How are the 20" setup in the snow? I know the 21" setup on the 550s are not great in the snow but wonder if the 20" are better. Also, is the ride quality harsher compared to the 19" stock? Lastly, is there a spare in the Gl450 w/ 20" setup?

The running board seems to get in the way for me when I was getting in and out of the car. But I am assuming you get used to this and is not a problem? Also, I have little kids so the running board can help.

I just check tire prices on tirerack:
275/50/20": $472 Goodyear OEM. Really no other option. Yikes.
275/55/19": ~250. Few options.
The GL550 295/40/21": $437. Continental OEM. Really no other option.

I am assuming the 20 and 21s are run-flats. But why are the 20" more expensive than the 21s?

Maybe the 20's are runflats?

Strangely, both are runflats. I guess the 20" Goodyears are just more expensive than the 21" Continentals even in smaller size. Or due to supply.

Interesting.. if you look at the GL550 option list.. the 20 inch wheels are 275/45/20

20" Two-Tone 5-Double Spoke Wheel
Finish: Black and Polished
Wheel Size: 8.5 J x 20 ET 56
Tire Size: 275/45 R20

*Price includes set of 4 wheels.

gives you a lot more choices for tires!

I have a GL550 and I'm looking for winter tire options.

Get the appearance package. You are right, it looks slightly better (IMHO). The caveat would be if you live in the mountains and get lots of snow. Otherwise, the Goodyear 20" Runflat tires are not great but reasonably good for driving in the snow. You'll notice a lot of understeer. The front tires don't seem to want to pull you in the direction you want to go like a narrower snow tire would do. A lot better though than anything without 4 wheel drive and very stable.

You'll get used to the running boards. My 2 and 4 year olds would have a very difficult time getting in my GL without them.

Agree, you get used to running boards and if you have young children they are a must.
