Rear Entertainment Pre Wire for 2011 GL
It looks like there is some variation between the Rear Entertainment System Option that comes from the factory and the unit that is an accessory that those with Pre Wire option can install. Bought as an accessory for example, the screens are an inch smaller and DVDs go directly into the unit.
I know that the unit comes with wireless headphones, but it's not clear to me whether or not passengers can listen through the car speakers with the RSE accessory that is installed after the fact with the pre-wire option. Does anyone know you can listen to video through the speakers with the mercedes RSE unit installed after the fact?

I don't think you can.
I don't use the system that much so I am not 100% sure. But I noticed that I can't play DVD stored in the rear box to the front screen. It is just not in the source list in the Comand system and why I believe it's not possible. However, You can play DVDs stored in the front magazine to all three screens and sound through the speakers. Of course, the front screen will be darken as soon as you shift it out of "Park". But the video will still play to the rear screens and speakers.
