Key recoding
Anyone bought a blank key and had it recoded locally? I have lost one of my keys and have heard i can just buy a new one online, and have an auto locksmith recode it for my car.
The dealership wants me to come in to order the key and then wait 3-6 weeks for a new one, and then come back in to have the key and engine computer updated.
I would like a new key by the end of the week so am wondering if the auto locksmith route would work. I have Keyless Go so am curious as to whether there really is any other option that the dealership.

I'd worry about an aftermarket / 3rd party key, assuming you're going to be paying anything above 50% of what the dealer will charge. If I remember right, the KeylessGo replacement keys cost ~$430? But that money comes with the guarantee that the dealer will get you out the door with a working key.

From what I ve heard the dealer is your only option when it comes to keys. Nobody else can program one. Even if you buy one on eBay they will not program it for you.

Thanks for the insights - I'll go in tomorrow to a different dealer near me and see what they say.
At least it sounds like it must be secure if the dealer is the only place to get this done.

Affirmative on this. Getting a replacement key for our CPOed '08 was a total goatrope. There is a key learning process described somewhere on the board. We got so far as to get the new key to turn on the engine and the car would say it was in gear but was it clearly in neutral as it rolled freely backwards in D1-6. Pretty scary really so we had it programmed by making the trek to the nearest dealer (3hrs).
