2009 GL 320 BlueTec 18" winter tire not recommended?

Hi guys, I'm new here. Does anyone know why 18" winter tires is not recommended on 2009 GL 320 with the automatic folding 3rd row seats? I could ask my dealer but I might not get an honest answer. Thanks for any info.

The 18-in tire won't be a runflat.

Hi Kent, but you don't think it has something to do with safety? But I went with the Pirelli Ice & Snow 18" anyway and it drives and feels softer than the Goodyear 20" runflat OEM. Well I should not compare winter with all-season but I was expecting the reverse. Thanks for your response.

Winter tires are softer by design, it's what helps them eat the snow and ice. I run 18" Blizzacks on my '08 GL320 and love them! In the summer I pop my 19" Dunlap summer tires back on. I do not need run flats, as the '08 doesn't need the ad blue so I have a spare. Run flats by design are a very rigid tire - the side walls are much thicker so if you do blow one, it'll stand up longer so you can get somewhere to get it fixed. If you have AAA or similar, running without run flats should be fine. We took the run flats off my wife's X5 and put on regular tires - the ride is much softer - which is preferred by us, that truck is really bouncy on the run flats.

BJ021, I agree the run flats are bouncy and not my preferred types of tires as well. Maybe just another summer and I'll probably replace them with regular tires and keep tirefit kit. In my long driving experience, I have never experienced a blow-out or a flat, but as they say, there is always a first time. Thanks for the feedback.
