Nav retrofit

I have a 2010 GL350 and I want to convert the basic radio to the nav unit. I have read a lot of links in the forum, but the information is not quite clear. I have sourced a nav head unit from a 2009 GL and I want to know what else i would need to get the conversion done. I would like to have sirius and HD radio, so I think i need a tuner and antennas and wiring. But I'm not sure what part numbers I will need or where to get it.

Any input would be great.

Thanks

If you havnt bought a OEM nav unit yet, DONT!

The OEM mercedes navigation is TERRIBLE! The worst nav system I've ever seen. An aftermarket one will be way way better, you'll have touch screen and a bigger screen, and dvd while driving. My aftermarket unit I put in my hummer was 20 times better than the mercedes one.

I like the OEM look. Also, wouldn't it be a nightmare to fit an after market system in mercedes.

You should come and drive my wife's 2006 Cayenne S. You'll yearn for the Mercedes unit in no time.

Not to try and deter you, but if it's just the NAV you want, trust me you should get a Garmin or TomTom unit and mount it somewhere you like. You could even modify the power so it's hard-wired and not as obvious. But the NAV in the GL is, for some reason, almost as bad as the one in the Cayenne S.

I've been on road trips that totalled roughly 1400, 2300, 1200, 400, and 600 each and many shorter trips since I purchased my 09 new. My 09 has the current navigation unit that is installed in the 11s. I've been to out of the way places along the lake in Michigan and I've been to urban areas in South Florida. Never have I had any problems quickly entering information or getting to my destination. It has even bailed me out in some pretty rural areas when the road I wanted to take was closed. Maybe once I missed a turn because the audible instructions weren't that clear but never have I thought, "gosh, this nav system stinks."

I also have a 2007 4Runner Ltd. with the Toyota/Lexus navigation system. If you want to talk about annoying, try having to press the "I Agree" legal disclaimer button EVERY time you start the vehicle. How about having to push the "Audio" button EVERY time you shift out of reverse. Apparently, to the engineers at Toyota, you must be lost and turning around in someone's driveway and in need of the nav function anytime the car is put in reverse. How about having to punch your way through three menus every time you want to connect a different cell phone via Bluetooth. And yes, the Toyota has a touch screen but I can't quite figure out what is so great about having fingerprints all over your screen all of the time, buttons that have to be pushed just right or the wrong letter is entered or a screen that doesn't work quite as well when it is cold out. Personally, I think the input method in the GL is easier (not by much) to use than a touch screen once you get familiar with it. Just thought I'd throw in my $.02.

I find the touchscreen in my soon-to-be-gone Escalade to be better than the buttons in my new GL, but I also find the voice input on the GL to be excellent and LIGHT YEARS beyond the POS voice input on the Slade that I could never get to work right.

Basically, I'm putting my effort into learning the voice input.

Yeah, I like the voice input too. My problem is that my kids are in the car pretty much anytime I'm using the navigation system. I have a better chance winning the lottery than I do getting them to be quiet for the 15-20 seconds it takes to enter an address using voice commands.

Question '10 Comand unit in 2007 GL?

Is it possible to put a '01 Comand Unit into a '07 GL? ..advised? I have the OEM 2007 Comand and RES and looking to replace the RES

I believe the '10 Comand can load the DVD right into it? and view it in the Comand screen as well?

If not, what to go with for RES? Vizualogic? Rosen? Invision?

[I did a search but those threads go back a few years...hoping for someone who put in an aftermarket in '10/'11.

Thanks.

A couple of folks here are very happy with a pair of (mounted) iPads for the RES. They're coming out with the iPad 2 and already creating the iPad 3 from what I've read. But this whole idea of swapping out COMAND units, either through neglect or design, is potentially a major nightmare.

Anything can always be done, depends on how much you want to spend and whats involved. I've got an 2010 and the benefit is running two different DVDs by using the one upfront. Yes, the NAV could use some major upgrades but you need to settle for what you get.

Thats the aftermarket navigation I had in my hummer. Im not sure what version that is in the video but get the newest version. Let me tell you that nav unit is 100x better than the one in the benz. Touch screen , dvd while driving, big screen, every thing you could need.
