IPOD connector broken in 2007 GL450

IPOD connector broken in 2007 GL450
I have a 2007 GL450 with NAV and an IPOD cable that connects to an IPOD in the glovebox. The IPOD glovebox connector is coming apart in the glove box....the piece that you click into the bottom of the IPOD is coming apart.
A replacement cable is about $50 and it connects into the radio from behind the radio and runs to the right and enters from the left side of the glove box and the connector terminates the cable.
how hard is it to get behind the radio and are there any DIYs? i've searched and couldn't find any?
