Out Of Control!!
Seeing the many air bag failures on the forum led me to investigate totally replacing the airmatic on my 2009 GL. Basically after a little info digging, I decided to source some ML front coil spring/struts and rear springs. Installed. Have been loving the ride, handling (way less wobbly feeling), and comfort of knowing the vehicle wont be lowered in the morning when i go out to get in it.

Oh. Only error code is a "Malfunction" code. With a pic of a gl. No worries as i simply hit the left steering wheel up or down button and it disappears. My theory is that I only need to secure the level sensors horizontally and that should be negated. Just lazy at the moment.

I like mine to self adjust for load and towing.

Everything will run @ $1600 ($1200 front and $400 rear). I found the best online prices here: www.parts.com

I ordered the Arnott replacement air shocks but cannot get the suspension bolts off. For those that have done it themselves, what's the trick to loosening to lower control arm bolts?

2008 GL450 Airmatic Question
Hello! First post hopefully this is the right area. I have a 2008 GL450, the front left sags when the vehicle is turned off. However if I raise the vehicle there is never a issue with air loss. Ideas?

I have a 2011 GL550 with 102K miles, original owner. Recently I noticed that the left rear of the car down in the morning. I start the car and everything levels to normal. After driving, parking and returning to the car sometimes the left rear is down, sometimes not. I took the car to MB and they diagnosed that both rear bags needed to be replaced for a outrageous cost. Found arnoutt and am ready to pull the trigger. Wanted to do more due diligence first. Today I go out to the car in the morning and the entire left side is down. By the way the right side has never been down. Will one leaky bag cause this or is there more to the problem? One thing I have considered is that the battery is original. In the past I have heard the pump come on for a brief second or two while parked in the garage to level. I no longer hear this. Is is possible that the AMPs drop on the battery and the GL computer doesn't allow the pump to kick in? Other than spraying soapy water on the bags is there anything else that I can test before I start replacing bags? I do not believe that MB diagnosed this correctly.

for Cool Just - There is a reverse torx bolt you need to backoff, while holding the suspension bolt. BOTH of these are on the same side where the bolt attaches, so you cannot use a socket wrench to do it. I did it by using a crescent wrench to hold the "outer" bolt, and loosened the reverse torx with the appropriate size. You may have to clean the dirt out to see the reverse torx socket.

I had some time this weekend to get under the car and sprayed bags with soapy water, no leaks. Also discovered that I can raise the car (using the raise feature) and the bags hold air and suspension stays inflated. But when raise feature is lowered, suspension sags after 30 mins or so. Suggestions?

I think there is a tiny leak in the bladder near the fold. When I raise the car I think it "seals" and when it's cold it may leak more. Not really sure.
I'm with BlownV8 and will be replacing it soon. A minor leak like mine is really just a nuisance but if it leaks down within an hour then fix it right away as you will be running the risk of overheating the pump.

I had the Malfunction error with the front being low the back seems fine. I took it to the dealer and they are asking for $3995 to replace front shocks and air struts. I'm sure this is not reasonable. I took to another mechanic and he said only air shocks need to replaced any advice?

That price is unreasonable.

slight Tilt front passenger side when I drive GL450 2008
Hello I drive a gl450 2008, when I park it for days nothing seems to go wrong everything is fine the airmatic suspensions are ok, but once I start driving, the front passenger side starts to tilt like there's a leak of some sort, I'm confused cause reading the thread I would believe if the airsprings were leaking it would lose air over days and collapse, mine doesn't do that it only tilts when I drive it

Reviving an old thread here as I need to know exactly what happened if I did not disconnect the Level sensor plug. I have a 2010 GL350 and the setup is different. I cannot find the plug behind wall fender well liner indicated in the Arnnot video.
The attached instruction clearly indicates to "Disassemble the level control sensor rod" instead of the plug.
Anybody can tell me which is the correct way to do it? and in case of the "sensor rod", what will happen if I do not "Disassemble the level control sensor rod"?

I have separated the upper steering triangle without disassembling the level control sensor rod or disconnecting the level sensor plug and worried if I have damaged the level sensor already. The upper steering triangle just went up after the separation by itself. Anyone can let me know because I am concerned that I may need to change the sensor assembly if I damaged it.
