You're not getting "a few mpg less," you're getting 30-40% less.

That math works out for me just fine.

Maybe where YOU are, but where I am in California, Diesel is more expensive than premium.. and just a few cents less than premium, depending on the spot.

Let's not forget just one talking point the GL550 has over its other siblings- that AWESOME FRONT END. GAME OVER. Add to that the standard UV glass and other goodies, I'll take the 550. YMMV.

If the 350 had the 550's front end, and the other stuff, I might consider it. Might.

Yes, except we have BLUE glass.

If the sporty looks really made you choose the 550 over the bluetech then that's great.

To me it didn't matter. But there's really no need to for Bluetech owners to brag. Doesn't make a huge difference and depending on states, the prices of Diesel can be more expensive...

Either way, 450 and 550 are faster/quicker than the Bluetechs. There's my argument.

2005 E320 CDI, 2007 GL 450
I think some of the gas owners are missing the geek factor in owning a diesel. In my Jetta I loved nothing more than to go for milage runs when I had her out on the road. My best was 59.9 mpg. In my E 320 CDI I've got it over 40 mpg. It's just fun and fun to brag about no different than 1/4 mile times with a hot rod or pictures of nice mods some of you guys do to your GL's. I wish I could of got a nice used GL 350 but the used prices on those things are insane. I settled for a GL 450 and love it. No matter what, it's pretty cool to be in a position in my life that I can afford two, albeit used, MB's. Never the less, I'm not getting rid of my Jetta until I give it to my 9yo when she turns 16.
