Aftermarket trailer hitch option from CURT

http://sitepro12.sitepro.com/masterl..._13102_INS.pdf

I recently saw this hitch for the GL on ebay being offered at about $300 shipped. The capacity rating is half that of the factory hitch, but I'm only planning to do light hauling.

Anyone care to let me have the benefit of their comments?...

I wouldn't trust it. But I tow a heavy trailer long distances.

Heavier than 3500 lb! I tow a car trailer, about 5,000 lb. That is with a fully loaded car (5 passengers, 2 small dogs, thule box and bikes on top). GL350 pulls it well.

Was just curious and wondering if you were towing close to the limit.

- Mark, will be towing close to the limit

I saw this post and thought I'd share my install experiences with the "HitchKing" hitch (which I think is essentially the same as the Curt) - first disclaimer is that I only wanted the hitch to put my bike rack on it - so I didn't really care about towing limits, electrical hookups or SAM module. Adam from HitchKing walked me through the install and it seems straight forward enough it try it on my own.

It was a pretty painless install; didn't have to remove the bumper cover, but did need to lower the exhausts so you could get your hands there to mount the hitch to the metal frame of the bumper. There's some finagling you need to do to get it positioned correctly (which with such a heavy object is a PITA), but everything fit perfectly and there is no cutting involved to get everything in place.

I took some pics of the hitch post-install as well as with the bike rack!! Now I can take the 2 kids riding on our towns railtrail without stuffing all the bikes in the rear.

Hi... I'm from MA too and interested in installing a hitch. I got a few Questions:
1. How much for the unit?
2. Do you think is strong enough to tow a small trailer, which will be used to haul stuff like mulch or power tools?

Thanks... also if attaching small trailers will you need lights at the back of it, eventhough you are not driving with the trailer at night?

It was $400 shipped. I have no idea if its "strong enough" for a small trailer though on the sticker on the hitch it had a 3500lb rating on it. It seems as though its well built and the mounting points seem reasonable strong. The hitch is basically attached to the two metal posts coming out from the car that attach to the rear bumper. There are 4 bolts a side that attach the hitch to the posts.

I do not plan to use it for anything else than the bike rack, so I didn't really do any research prior to buying it or comparing how the OEM hitch mounts vs. this one. Can't help you answer the question, but if you want you are more than welcome to come check it out if you'd like!
