Unhappy 07 GL 450 check eng light on dont have a warranty(HELP)

Hi im new to this forum and any help is appreciated. I just bought a 2007 gl 450 with 63k miles, i drove it about 50 miles after i bought it. Then i put on 24" wheels and tires. I drove the vehicle about 5 miles to school, it sat maybe 2 hours. when i returned to started it up the check eng light was on. when i put it in gear it clunks. when i drive it doesnt shift out of 1st gear. I had it towed to a foregin car repair shop, that sad he was able to clear the code which had something to do with the speed sensor but it still wont shift out of gear.the check eng light went out after he cleared the codes.( he sad that is a lymp condition thats in the transmission and i have to take it to a mb dealer to clear that code. He also stated that he thinks me putting on the 24' wheels caused this problem. My question to the forum is. do you believe the wheels are the problem when the total tire height is the same as the factory 18" wheels. I must ad that the tire pressure sensors are not installed in the 24" wheels ( i ordered them but havent recieved them yet). I thought that will only make the low tire pressure light come on which hasnt came on anyways. Other people have had 24s on there gl 450 and 550 so i dont think its that, but if anyone has an experience with this please help. P.S i dont have a warranty and dont wanna take it to a shop that will charge me for there "maybe try this part will work" Any help is appreciated.

Go to your local auto parts store and ask to borrow their OBD-II tester. They will normally lend it for free. Follows the instructions on the tester. The plug is right under the dashboard. Read the trouble codes and this should give you and idea of what the problem is.

ddub56,
I should have read more about your problem as I didn't see the part about the transmission problem you were having. The issues you describe are very much the same as those I had with my GL. The dealer had to replaced the transmission valve body. Search this group on tranny/valve body issues.

+1 on the above. I would take it to a Mercedes shop that can hook it up to a dedicated mb diagnostic system. When my turbo was failing the obd2 scanner tool would spit out completely random garbage codes and was a waste of money and time spent looking for the root cause. Also, for the price you paid for those 24" and some extra change you could have had yourself an aftermarket warranty. Just sayin'.
