Cool IPhone cannot be controlled when connected

Whenever I hook my iPhone 4 to my 2008 GL450 via the tongle in the glove compartment, I cannot control the iPhone directly. I can only select the songs via the steering wheel menu buttons. Is there a way to be able to control the iPhone directly?

No way to control the music. All other functions of the phone are controllable if you hit the HOME button.

If you can jailbreak, noaccessoryspash from Cydia (http://modmyi.com/cydia/package.php?id=12752) will restore the normal iphone controls even when it is plugged in. It is a must have IMO. Trying to control it via the steering wheel controls is hopeless.

Another thing I did to improve usability was to get an extension cable for the ipod connector, and routed it through the center console so that cable comes out the center storage compartment and makes the iphone more accessible.

Not that I know of unfortunately. One (expensive) way to get around the problem is to get a Mobridge unit, which connects to the CD changer interface and gives you another IPod input that allows you to control the ipod via the stereo controls, a headphone jack input and A2DP bluetooth connectivity, which is less than great (cuts out frequently). Unfortunately, using the stereo to control the iPhone isn't much better than the factory solution, but you can connect via the headphone jack or A2DP, which doesn't bring up the splash screen so you can control it via the iPhone screen.

There are similar competing products, but I don't know much about them, and I think they have similar problems as well because emulating a CD changer has limitations.

You should not be getting any cutouts at all on the mObridge if it is set up properly. You can also have it plugged in AND control it from the iPod too (not have to use the car's interface). If you have any questions you can contact our tech support if it was purchased from us. If not, you need to see your retailer for better help. It should be working flawlessly... Part of the guarantee we have with a mObridge or even our iTronic product line.

Do you have any suggestions how to make the A2DP connection work better? The local dealer I bought it from spent time talking to Mobridge (or whoever distributes them in the US) and got a replacement unit (and confirmed it has the latest firmware), but it does the same thing with 3 different IOS devices, so it isn't my phone. Sometimes it works pretty well, but other times there are short drops in the audio every 10-15 seconds regardless of where the phone is located. The local shop doesn't sell many of them, so they don't have a lot of experience with the device. The current and old unit also won't download my phone book so I have to dial a number every time I make a call. If you have any suggestions to fix either problem it would be appreciated. I like the device in theory, but so far it isn't working very well in practice.

You welcome to call our support, however for non-customers we have a very small fee that covers unlimited support for one year. That being said, if you are not the installer, we should really be talking to someone that will be actually locating the unit (and relocating it if necessary). We are now support and distribution for most of the US, but this took effect on November 1, 2011. The problem was there was too many dealers/distributors that were simply not that familiar with the Mercedes/Porsche ins and outs. We are engineers on the products as well as cars, so we know them quite well. Therefore we now handle all these issues for clients.

Thanks, I'll give you a call. The unit was installed by an authorized dealer last year who tried to help, but wasn't able to resolve the problems.
