changing tires...can i change tire size???
I am in the market for new tires for my GL. I have the appearance package with 20" rims. (275/50/20) I was wondering if I can substitute the oem size with something else like 285/50/20 or 275/40/20. Not much of a selection for the oem size tire.
PS: I Do Not Want Runflats.

Yes you can. I installed 285/50/20 no run flats when my GL was 3 months old. Search this forum and you will find many threads about it.

thanks. one last question: how many miles do you have on them. i would like a tire that lasts more than 20k miles. these runflats suck.

I put Michelin LTX/MS 2's on my GL450 (with 20" wheels) in 275/55/20 - that is very slightly taller than the OEM 275/50/20's. No issues at all, after about 5K miles. I wanted a quality All-Season tire that would give me good treadwear and comfort. These fit the bill quite nicely. The other tire that I was considering was the Bridgestone Dueller Alenza. Both are available in that size, and I'm sure the Bridgestone is a great tire too - I just like Michelins...

I got HANKOOK VENTUS ST RH06. Very smooth ride. They look a little beefed compared to originals, but only if you pay attention.

Updates? I am considering 285/50/20 Michelin Lattitude HP currently on sale at Costco and Kaltire only thing I worry about is them scratching the rims. MB dealer claims size not approved for GL. Have you ever been denied suspension warranty issues? Thanks

No scratching..that's for sure. My dealer told me the same thing, that it's not approved by MB and when I traded in my car - they said they will need to change tires to Run Flats 275/50/20 size to CPO it. After that I saw my car with my Hankook 285/50/20 tires on the lot with CPO sticker on it. it was sold in about 2 weeks with the same tires. I had one issue with suspension during my ownership (air shock knocking sound) and they never said anything about tires.
Good Luck.

The rims can also be scratched by the MB dealership so I wouldn't worry about that. I also don't think you have anything to worry about regarding potential suspension warranty claims. The one thing to consider however is that your speedometer will be slower by 1.3% if you go with 285s as opposed to 275s. Also the odometer will be affected by that same amount for the lifetime of the tires. Not a big deal but it is worth considering.

Hi All, I have to get new tires for my GL450 with appearance package. Originally I had 275/50/20 but 3 years ago changed to 285/50/20, mainly because of cost. I found the car accelerated slower with the 285's, and just generally wasn't happy, and am thinking of switching back to 275/50/20 (stock specification), even though it costs more. Anyone else have issues with the 285's?

I picked up a set of Michelin Latitude Tour HP in 285/50/20 and had them on since October. Had zero problems and I absolutely love the ride. No problems with going one size up, no error messages. Would buy again. They were cheap too, $180 per tire.
