Tire sizes for 20" rims

Tire sizes for 20" rims
I have a 2009 GL320 with 275-50-R20
I'm ditching the run-flats since Mercedes also ditched the run-flats, and will be getting normal tires for the summer with the inflater kit. I have the space in the trunk for the kit, and if that's what the newer models have it's good enough for me.
I saw 295's but they were on new 21" rims with the fender flares.
What tire sizes will fit and look good on my stock 20" rims? How wide can I go? My winter tires need to come off soon so I need something fat and awesome that will still fit in my fenders.

What about 295 45 or 40 - anyone have any luck or is that too fat?
Now that I'm finding so many tires in the 285 size how do I know what will feel good and work good on the GL? It's a heavy car I don't want to mess up and get something too cheap. What do I look out for?
