Buy extended warranty, go naked, or trade her in on a 2009/2010?

Hello Folks,

I'm sure a few of you have had this same decision to make. My wife has a 2007 GL450 that will be out of CPO warranty in less than 2 weeks. I've been offered a 2 year CPO extension for $4k. We enjoy the car, it's got about 56k miles on it and we only drive it about 5k miles/year. What do you think are the pros/cons of either buying the warranty and keeping it for another 2 years, keeping it for 2 more years and going naked (no warranty), or trading it in on a newer GL with around 2-3 years of warranty left.

Thanks for the advice!

I can't offer much advise. My S, with 5 years and 200K mile I put on it, hardly had any repair. I did most of the maintenance at indy shop for same price just as a Camry or Civic. I've heard lot of horror stories on it, but my experience is completely opposite. Car still run & ride smooth & shine.

As for the repairs, I hardly had any. Probably spent at most 2000 on repair.

My GL, on the other hand, have visit the dealer twice in the last three months I own it, for repair. And the airmatic just failed last night, so take it back to dealer today. Lucky that I have CPO.

I don't have any long term experience with GL reliability, but if you only drive 5,000 miles a year, it doesn't seem worth $4K for a two year extension. The odds are you won't need $4K worth of repairs over the next 10K miles especially since the warranty is probably priced assuming you will drive 12-15K miles a year instead of 5K.

Personally, I would roll the dice and take the risk myself. There's a good chance nothing will go wrong over the next 2yrs and you save $4K. Or maybe you only wind up putting $1-2K of repairs in and you are still ahead of the game. The downside is you have a $5-6K repair, but net net that's only $1-2K worse off than paying $4K upfront.

For the record, my wife drives a 2011 GL and I elected to pay $4K to extend the standard 4yr warranty out to 6yrs. But my wife puts 15-20K annually on the vehicle, so years 5 and 6 could see some potentially expensive repairs.

I have an 07 GL with 67k miles on it, I purchased a 4yr-100k miles warranty before the factory warranty expired, I paid 4k for the warranty. So far (Thank God) no issues. only the regular maintenance such as service A, B etc.

I bought a 100,000 mile, 5 year warranty on mine when I bought it. I paid $2500 for it and I have had more than $2500 in repairs under warranty. I am high mileage and tend to agree if you only do 5K per year, it might not be worth it.

Just received update from the dealer on my 09 GL. They will replace both front suspension & air pump. They also found leak on the steering rack, and will replace that as well. Lucky that the car is under CPO warranty, so we don't have to pay anything. Else, it would have been $4-5K job (steering rack is $2k by itself).

So for the 4 months that we own the car, first it was a sunroof & rack, then now the air-matic & suspension. Without the warranty coverage, we would have paid at least $5-6K in repair.

The car has 54K mile when we bought it, and 56K now !!!. My S has 230K mile now, and hardly any repair on it.

Go figure !!
