Is my diesel getting louder? AND Loose Idler Pulley?
I purchased a 2012 GL 350 in April of 2012, and at first I was in love. Now, I am missing my old Lexus...
A couple of months ago, when my GL 350 was only 4 months old, an idler pulley came loose and shredded a belt, which then knocked out a temperature sensor...caused the car to go into this mode where it could go no faster than 55 mph or something like that. I had to pull over, with my kids in the car and wait 45 minutes for MBRACE tow to pick me up, and they could not take the kids in the tow truck...awesome... The MBRACE tow truck guy then broke the valve stem off of my tire when strapping it to the flatbed tow truck, and the dealer then wanted to charge me $300 to repair it. I refused, they said OK it is covered under warranty, then I got a bill for it from them...super awesome...
(I LOVE breaking down on the side of the highway with my 2 young kids in tow in my brand new $70,000 car...)
But back to my original subject, it seems that my diesel engine is getting louder... It used to be very quiet, and now seems to chortle like a large truck. It is almost at 10,000 miles, and needs the service, which I am getting next week. But could this be possible?
I have heard that the AdBlue is very expensive, and the dealer service depts are making a killing on it. I have also read that you can buy this DEF stuff at Auto Zone for about $5 a gallon, can I add it myself?

AND, when I make tight turns, both going left and right, I can hear a predictable "clunk" noise coming form underneath the car...
I so want to love my new car, but I am feeling really disappointed so far...
The diesel gets louder as the service approaches as the oil thins out. This is normal.
The clunk- they are clunky. Mine clunks too and i live with it. There is a tsb to tighten the steering linkage. That could be it. Or 100 other things. Have them use the electronic ears and try to pinpoint where the clunk comes from.
The urea- yes- you can pour it yourself. Use a funnel so you don't spill it. It s stinky and eats carpet.

As far as the loudness goes. If you get a chance go to a dealer that has a car like yours and get them to run it while you stand outside and see if it sounds louder or softer than yours. If yours is louder then get the dealer to fix it while the warranty is still in effect.
