spare ignition key?

There must be some cheaper way to get a spare ignition key for my '07 GL 450 than forking over $275 to the dealer.

There is - 1) Make a spare key a part of your purchase deal.
2) find the original owner and hope the spare key is still in his possession!

There isn't a cheaper legal way. The blank has to be sent offsite and programmed then mated to your car's drive auth system.

We were lucky enough to get two keys when we got ours. But $275 isn't that bad considering that you will pay minimum of $100 for a key pretty much for any modern vehicle. Not cheap and I'm not sure what exactly are you paying for.

Having had some experience with getting duplicate keys for other (non MBZ) electronically secured vehicles, I can say this is about par.

I've made sure that every preowned vehicle we have bought has the second key and valet. You would be surprised at how many vehicles I've looked at and there is only one key. WTF? You spend all that money and the dealer hands you one key. It blows my mind at how they minimally get these things ready for selling.
