Oil leaks? Check the plastic Y shape connnector that goes to the turbo

I have 2 - 08 320 cdis , ML and GL

Both of these we took out the Ypipe that goes from the turbo to the 2 air filters and they were both cracked

I bought both trucks used but CPO and extensive mercedes dealer service records

The ML was badly cracked on the bottom, you could not tell from the top

The one on the GL had small cracks around all of the round hole areas, you could not see them until you cleaned the oil off

So even if you are changing your orange seals you could have a leak here also, this part is modified and i dont know which years got the newer part...
Maybe starting in 09-10 the new part was used...

They are not cheap but this needs to be inspected whenever you have it apart to do the orange seal, air filters etc

A leak here may end up trashing your swirl motor and i dont know what else

Mercedes calls this part the clean air line , my 2008 GL320 part number was 642-090-82-37
The orange seal is also modified so you will need a different orange seal from now on

Hope this helps someone else

That's a good heads up to know about. If dirty air starts getting sucked into the turbo, damage to the turbo and other internal engine parts (combustion side) could also happen.

Thanks for the tip! According to the MB tech, I have a small oil leak at the turbo, though not enough to register on the dip stick. From all the good info on the forum, I figured it was the seal and I'd have that taken care of this summer (along with the sway bar links). We had too much to repair last summer and wanted to distribute the costs.

As soon as it stops raining, I'll look for that piece to see if the leak is from there rather than the seal. Is this for the vent that can sometimes clog with oil?

i dont think it is the vent that clogs, not sure what that is..

this is the y piece that is right on top of the motor in the center
it is the plastic piece that holds the big orange seal and connects to the turbo

i replace both the large and the small orange seals every oil change or every other, they both tend to leak

will be interesting to hear if any others find cracks in the y pipe

would also be nice to know what year or if mercedes changed that to the modified version

my ML had 2.5 years and 45,000 miles on the new/modified part and no issues, so hopefully they will hold up better than the original part

Id like to trim it off and try to fit a silicone coupling over it to the turbo, I have to look at it next time when I'm under the hood.
