Smile In the market for a GL

Hey all!

Im in the market for a GL and I have been eyeing a few 2008-2010 models (online only thus far).

I assume the 350 is better on gas mileage then the 450/550 but by how much?. Are all models the same in terms of outside looks (aside from the stock rims), and interior cabin size?

Since I am looking at a pre-owned, is there anything in particular i should keep an eye out for when im at the dealership and when i take it for a test drive?

Thanks all!

I will recommend 2009 or 2010, diesel (350) better MPG than 450 but if you have any plan to tow anything go for 350 better torque.

Check the air shocks but otherwise never had a problem w/ former and actual GL, I just place an order for my 4th GL, will be my first diesel...

The gasoline 450 will . get you 21mpg on highway, about 13 around town. The diesel will get you just shy of 30 on the highway and 20-21 around town.

The 350 diesel will have the adblue system which is prone to expensive problems. The 2007/2008 gl320 will be far more reliable as there is no adblue. The 350 does not get better mileage.

On all x164 you should check airmatic suspension components. On diesels you should check for oil leaks indicative of expensive problem (oil cooler seals). It is essential that if you are buying a truck with over 40k miles there is documentation that tranny oil has been changed at 37-40k miles.

Is there a recommended interval after the initial change? I had the dealer do a fluid change @ 100K (50K miles after the trans was apart) and was going to do it again @ 150K. Unless I missed it, there isn't a change interval in the manual beyond the initial one.

I screwed up and didn't flush the fluid until 88K miles. Any ideas on the impact this would likely have? Thanks.

Air shocks/compressors and rear door latch mechanism will be some of your most expensive issues, great leverage points when haggling price. The interior tech may not be up to par with cars of the same year. You may not have bluetooth.

The GL's aren't for the faint of heart. Big issues will arise like power steering pump leaks and failures, suspension replacement, rack & pinion commonly go out, and brittle wiring throughout just to name a few.

GL's with remaining warranties and CPO extended warranties are highly encouraged, unless you have a high tolerance for financial pain.

My 450 has been great. Super low operating costs over the last 100k miles. Gas mileage is not the best. Before my 22" wheels and tires I was averaging 17.7 mpg but that's dipped to around 16.3. I use regular unleaded and the thing runs like a champ with 200k miles.

I have the same sentiments. Once you work out a few bugs, it ain't bad. Like alx said, the truck ages well.

Did I read you correctly? You use REGULAR unleaded fuel? No knocking or lack of power/torque?

I did a 1,000 mile test of unleaded vs. premium. No knocking except faintly at certain low rpm, low throttle conditions, which is nothing to be concerned about, and I think that knocking was also present with premium. No difference in power or driveability, and the mileage was slightly higher with the regular. If the knock sensor was retarding the timing to prevent knock, the mileage would have suffered. It's a mystery to me why Mercedes is so adamant about premium fuel.

No issues and I've been running regular for over 100k miles. In fact, the car runs smoother on regular than super under normal circumstances. If I were to tow, I would probably run super but for highway and normal driving it works great.
