Problem with 09 GL320 Bluetec - burning smell and mysteriously disappearing oil
SubscribeHi all,
I've recently been having an issue with my 09 GL320 Bluetec. Whenever the engine is on, there's a noticeable burning smell, but I can't really place it. It's a little bit like burning plastic, but also a little bit like burning fuel? The oil level has also been decreasing really quickly. A few weeks ago, the check engine oil level notification came on and I had to pour in 4 liters of oil just to fill it up. A few days ago, the check engine oil level notification came on again! There is no leakage (at least that I've noticed) and when there was before, I already replaced the intake seal. Any idea what could be causing this?
Thanks.

Are you also leaving small spots of oil on the ground? Your year is just about due for oil cooler seals. The oil will puddle in the valley of the cylinder banks and when you tilt the truck will get dumped sometimes right on the exhaust causing what you describe.
Also check all your intake hoses and seals. Also check pass side engine top for fine oil mist/ spray film u underhood and surroundings

Remove the covers under the engine and inspect the rear crankshaft seal for leakage (usually absorbed by oil pan sound deadening material).

Most likely oil cooler leak. Does not always leave oil on the ground.
