Transmission Service 2012 GL350

My 2012 GL350 has 41,000 miles on it and I read of the importance of servicing the transmission.
Should the transmission be flushed with all the fluid removed and the filter replaced or will a drain of fluid and filter replacement be adequate?
What transmission does my vehicle have and what type of fluid should the transmission shop be using?
I was just advised by Pleasanton Mercedes in Pleasanton, Ca. the service will be a total cost of $475.00
Thanks

That price sounds about right. If the oil comes out clean you don't need a flush. Yes, change the filter also - you want to take the pan off to clean it and the magnet anyway, so it's no big deal to change the filter while you're at it.

Compatible transmission fluid:

You seem to have a 722.9 family transmission and you have to drain the transmission, the torque converter (TC) and the cooler. Dropping the pan only gets you only 4.5 of the 10 quart. If your TC has no drain plug you have to do a flush anyway.
The main issue is not the draining. It is the refill!!. You need to refill through the drain plug. Look at the 722.9 threads. A $60 geared oil pump (Ebay), fittings for $20, a 12v reverse switch and you are in business. Oil spec is 236.14 for red or 236.15 for blue fluid. I believe you are already on blue fluid. Its two hours of work and you can save about $250. Maybe not worth it if you have only one MB.
The most important thing is that you get a much as possible of the old fluid out of the system and replacing the fluid in the TC is a must!!. Make sure you get a new pan and overflow pipe as well. The new design holds more fluid in a higher level in the tranny and improves oil circulation when driving through curves or in high torque situations.

more info:
722.9 serial number up to 2834526 use 236.14 spec. red fluid, white tubed pan
722.9 serial number as of 2834527 use 236.15 spec. blue fluid, green tubed pan

AR27.20-p-0200-03r for torque converter draining.

American refiners on 236.14 are Mobil ATF 134, Shell ATF 134, Valvoline Synpower ATF 134
American refiners on 236.15 are Shell ATF 134FE or Shell Spirax S6 ATF 134ME

Per SI27.56-p-0001a
Oil pans without beveled edge and black pipe must be replaced by new parts in order to be able to install new filter.
oil pan w/ bevel a221 270 09 12
overflow pipe ( white ) a251 271 00 97
2 magnets a000 988 01 52

Good luck

Thanks for the information!
I think I will have my Mercedes dealership do the transmission service.
Now next on the list, is a complete brake service before a reminder light comes on.
