Bought 2008 GL550 with 149k on it
I recently purchased a 2008 GL550 with 149K on it. Pre purchase inspection results were great.
My credit union is offering me 3 year/36k route 66 warranty for about 1500. Exclusions include emission system, sound producing systems, paint, trim, brakes, mirrors. But it does cover suspension. What are your thoughts on extended warranty?

Get the warranty. Unlike a pickup truck, these high end SVU are not simple. You will get all your money back in one repair.

yes. for $1500 it is a no-brainer. especially if you are not the diy type.
the only somewhat wild card is "emission system". with some imagination i can see how 1/2 of the drivetrain can be passed as "emission system"- related...

The DCU Rep gave me the description of wrong warranty. The one I am actually enrolled in is basic power train warranty and only includes the following. I will cancel it as I don't see much value.
ENGINE
Crankshaft & bearings, oil pump, oil pump pickup/screen
and tube, pistons, rings, wrist pins, connecting rods &
bearings, timing gears, chain/belt, timing tensioners/
guides, camshaft, bearings, push rods, rocker arms/shaft,
hydraulic lifters, intake and exhaust valves and springs,
cylinder head gaskets. Engine block covered if mechanical
failure was caused by above-listed parts.
STANDARD TRANSMISSION
Transmission parts consisting of gears, input and
output shafts, bearings, overdrive housing. Transmission
case if malfunction was caused by the above listed parts.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Transmission parts consisting of gears, input and
output shafts, bearings, front pump, planetary assembly,
sprags, governor assembly, valve body, torque converter,
transmission case.
DRIVE AXLE ASSEMBLY
2-Wheel Drive:
Drive shaft, ring/pinion gears, pinion bearings, side
carrier bearings, carrier assembly, thrust washers, axle,
axle bearings, limited slip clutch pack assembly, universal
joints, CV joints, drive axle housing.
4-WHEEL / ALL-WHEEL DRIVE:
D rive shaft, differential & CV joints, transfer case parts
listed on contract.
COOLING
Water Pump, - Limited to 50% parts & labor.
ELECTRICAL
Alternator, Starter and Voltage Regulator - Limited to
50% parts & labor

the only benefit i see is that this warranty covers the timing chain issue that some om642 motors develop.
however, the early om642 engines (07-08) generally dont develop that problem.
the transmission coverage does not cover the conductor plate (tcu) which is what fails on the 7g tranny.
so.. yes- do cancel as this might be a good basic coverage for some vehicles, but the x164 cdi is not one of them

Duh.
Anyway...
The 550 engine in the x164 is largely problem free. So even more so - cancel that particular coverage because it doesn't cover you in the problem areas of that particular make and model.
