2011 Mercedes GL350
2011 GL350 timing chain
I think my GL350 is ready for another timing chain.First one replaced at 21,000 miles and now at 49,000 it's making the same noise when not used for a couple days. Now that it's out of warranty I'm out 4k.Why are these chains failing so often?

Out Of Control!!
I think that you have other issues related to the 21000 mile change and most definitely with an additional change at 49000----I would talk to Dealer management before I did anything!!

No one knows.
I had the same problem on mine, on the replacement chain.
The dealer will blame it on lubrication and oil.
In reality, I think there is something wrong with the tensioner, or something wrong with the sprocket alignment, that cause premature chain wear every ~20k-40k miles.
Get rid of it, no one will be able to come up with a permanent fix. You aren't the first person to have to go through a second chain. Unimaginable, but true.
