most fleet om642 motors see 10-12k miles oil changes and live a long long time. i am starting to see trucks with over 500k miles on the sprinter side and they all do the 1-2 quarts burn rate between oil changes which is more than adequate imo.
Couldn't agree more.
It is just friggin hilarious that all of the over conscientious idiots with GL and ML OM642 engines keep trashing their engines by changing the oil too frequently. Just when those engines get used to new oil after a few thousand miles, we terrify the poor things by changing the oil yet again. No wonder the timing chains are stretching from fright, the oil coolers seals are bursting with fear, and the engine mounts are crapping their pants.**
These engines perform fine in a different platform, so there can't be a design flaw. Engines are NOT to blame. OWNERS ARE TO BLAME.

** Except those owners who religiously serviced their vehicles at their dealers, and yet suffered seized engines at 50k miles. In those case, it was not owners fault, it was dealers fault. But definitely never fault of OM642 installation in x164.

Everyone has a point here.

1. We need to see more Blackstone oil test reports to see if the wear is consistent over time.

2. Engine seizing could have been from oil cooler leak and left the motor without oil in these long OCIs. We give sensors too much credit nowadays. Thank goodness OM642s have a dipstick for oil which I use but how many people out there actually use it? My diesel Cayenne and BMW N63 don't have them..

3. The new oil spec is designed to help emissions and not necessarily to promote longevity of the engine.

The GL vehicles run hot compared to sprinters due to the aero flaps underneath the car. People have started to remove them for better air circulation. It is only 10 years young compared to sprinters. Only time will tell where the difference and deficiencies are between the two platforms.
