what is the new key synchronization process? is it required when buying new key

hello guys, just got a new (used) GL450 for me, the car have only 1 key and i was intrested in getting a second one

i went to the dealer and he quoted me $180 for the key ~$40 for the blade and $120 to "synchronize the key" i asked if that meant to program it and he said no the key comes pre programed

Im trying to find out if i can skip the "synchronization " process since the key is already programed to the car.

i found one or two posts that says that the key will work fine without the synchronization but i just wanted to double check if anyone else here knows more about that

the advisor has no idea what he is talking about. there is no synchronization. upon insertion of key that is programmed to your eis the key is branded for your vehicle and stored on the list of permitted keys in eis.

anyway $350 is about right for the key (even a bit on the low side) so... it doesnt matter what they are telling you. go for it.

From what I've been told the key can only be bought at a MB dealership and it's programmed by them too somewhere in the supply chain. Buying one off eBay will not work. I've not found any locksmith that will make/program a key/fob.

that is correct. once mated a key cannot be repurposed.

in reality there are a few other vendors that can program blank keys, but ymmv and i personally would never send a key of a vehicle i care about to any of those outfits...
