2010 GL450 liftgate issues

Few months ago the close switch on the liftgate started working intermittently. Sometimes you could press it once and it would close, sometimes it would take two or three times before it would close. I replaced the switch and it worked for a few weeks but now is doing it again. Everything works fine front he remote or the switch inside the car. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

So I looked at the problem a little closer tonight. If the car has been off for a awhile, 15-30 mins, the lift gate opens fine but won't close with the button, remote, or the interior button. Car on everything thing works fine. Turn car off everything still works fine. So I am thinking the battery may be low. Car has 116k miles on it, hasn't had a better in the last 3 years. How do I check the voltage through the dash display? Can't seem to figure it out. Thanks.

Now the darn thing won't power close at all. You can push it close and it latches without any issue. The remote, inside button, or trunk button will not close the liftgate. Doesn't matter if the car is on or off. I would love to try and fix this myself since the vehicle is out of warranty but I have a bad feeling that it is some electrical gremlin. Last gl we had spent 30 days in the shop and had to have a master Mercedes tech fly in to fix it! Thankfully that was under warranty! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my '09 GL550 opens every time, and closing works if the car has been driven at least 10 minutes, for about 5 minutes after shutting off the car.

it isn't battery voltage - we replaced both batteries on the advice of a local indy mechanic. well, I can now say that I know how to change the batteries, but the new ones are no different than the ones we pulled, which tested out to be perfectly fine.

it isn't the struts - we changed those too.

I'm ruling out the actual lift/close mechanism; it always works while opening and does work to close, when it has decided it wants to.

The latch mechanism seems to work fine and doesn't seem to be sticking open at all. So that leaves the pinch sensor, which showed up on a STAR scan as a fault, and/or the wiring, or the control unit (or maybe the programming inside the control unit?). Gonna have to dig around for that sensor and give that a shot. Beyond that, I think it's beyond my ability as a shadetree mechanic.

I have a 2011 GL450 and was having trouble with the liftgate. Very erratic operation. I pulled the switch out of the liftgate and found the connector corroded and full of water. I cleaned the connector (male and female sides) with electrical contact cleaner, applied dielectric grease, and put it back together. Haven't had a problem with it since then- about a year and a half now. Hope this helps.
