bad steering rack?

So GL developed this clunk/knock when turning steering wheel, but not all the time. Sometimes it is loud, sometimes not. I have checked all I could think of. I had helper turning the steering wheel while I was under a vehicle watching and listening. We could not replicate the loud clunk, but I could hear faint knock coming from the rack. So, is this common? Am I looking at replacing the rack? It is leaking slowly. I've added a quart over the past 5 years.

Clunk can come from many places and sound like it is coming from the he rack. Do you feel roughness/ binding in the steering? If not I would leave it alone until it starts to leak at a rate you don't like

Steering feels no different at all. I don't want to leave it alone because it sounds pretty bad sometimes. And it only makes noise when stationary or moving very (very) slow. Under normal driving conditions it is quite.

I have hear of that PS pump would cause this knock. It is not repetitive, but once in a while I could replicate it by turning the wheels the other way. It is somewhat similar to bad bushings. But with worn out steering rack bushings, the knock was always there and it gradually became louder. With my current issue the loudness and frequency of the issue occurring is all over the place.
