Best way to obtain spare key?

New here, so I apologize if this has been covered before but I didn't see anything when searching. I recently bought an 09 GL550 and the dealer only had one key. Would like to get a spare, do I have to get the key from the dealer?

I'm assuming you want your spare key to start the vehicle and not just unlock the door via a key hole. Your only option is dealer, pretty much.

You can buy the key itself off eBay or any other site a lot cheaper than you can at the dealership, but you'll need to go to the dealer or an independent shop to get them to pair it to the vehicle.

You have to get from the dealer if you want key fob that start the car. You can get one somewhere else but dealer will charge you a hefty fee to program it. They are around $300-$400

not really. unless it is a blank key. and i have not seen blank keys on ebay. once a key is paired it cannot be re-paired with a different vehicle. pairing is one time per key.

any competent auto locksmith can cut the mechanical key. but the electronic part is dealer-only as electronic "blanks" are generally not available.
